Between our guests and our own staff, we estimate more than 150 years of combined military service have passed through this property, worn on ball caps, tattooed on forearms, and carried quietly in the way people sit by a fire and don’t feel the need to fill every silence.

Okefenokee Pastimes is veteran owned. That matters less as a credential and more as a lens: we built this property the way we’d want a place to feel if we were the one arriving tired, decompressing, or traveling with a service dog and a lot of unspoken history.
Every branch is welcome here. Every era of service, every background, every story someone chooses to tell or keep to themselves. Whether you served four years or twenty-four, whether your service was decades ago or last season, you belong at this campground exactly as you are.
What Gratitude Means Here, Beyond a Discount
A discount code is easy. Real hospitality for veterans takes more than that, so it’s built into how we operate day to day:
- Our staff is trained to understand military courtesy, service related accessibility needs, and how to make check-in feel unhurried rather than transactional.
- Accessibility is treated as a baseline, not an accommodation request: paved paths where we can manage them, ground-level lodging options, and staff who will simply help without making it a production.

Folkston sits far enough from major light pollution that the Okefenokee area is known for some of the clearest night skies in the Southeast. Once the sun goes down, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night, and it’s one of the most consistently mentioned highlights in guest reviews. Bring a blanket, skip the flashlight once your eyes adjust, and give it twenty minutes; it’s worth the wait.
Stories by the Fire Ring
Some of the best conversations at this campground happen after dark, low voices around a fire ring, a guest who served in the Gulf trading stories with someone who did two tours decades earlier.
